Well. Brighton Festival and the Artists' Open Houses are in full flow and my space in The Open Studio on Brighton seafront is looking very spic. So I would love the world to flood in, love my work and carry it away to a good home. Not unlike the rainwater that deluged my stuff exactly a year ago but without the reworking of anything water soluble.
This blogging thing. It's turning into a bit of a moan once during every lunar cycle. And nobody reads it. I guess you have to start somewhere but I hope it isn't a cul de sac.
So I've failed to get anywhere in an art competition and my conspiracy light is on. The way it all went with this online thing had the whiff of fix about it.
And I've got the entry form for another competition on a table somewhere but I know in my gut that it's going to be another stitch up. I'm imagining that the establishment galleries know that mugs like me hold out that somehow we have a chance of getting recognised and they spot the chance to milk our hopes. So in my distorted world view I see them getting us to stick in our tenner to enter when all these competitions are for is to rake in the fees from my kind and to bolster the status of their favoured/ connected/ mates whose work they sell and take commission on. But of course this is nothing like the truth is it? A few days ago I entered a competition with the Saatchi Online gallery. First: I don't feel great about entering a competition - it's just not what I think I make art for. Second: the gallery is pretty astounding (link). New pieces are being posted by artists from all over the globe and they go up in their dozens per minute night and day.
Thinking on the competiton thing a bit more - maybe competing is exactly what I make art for. I want you all to love what I do. I don't know if that's sad. But it is true. I have just signed up to the Saachi Online gallery. Fascinating insight into just how many people out there are making art - often good art. Anyway I started mooching around on the site and came across an artist (Tara Leaver) whose description of the things that interest her could have been written for me. And she's living in same town as I am. Spooky. Nice the way her work bore no resemblance to mine whatsoever.
A bit more rummaging later and I came across a guy who I met a couple of days earlier. He is Jamie McCartney and his thing is based around plaster casts of bodies and their parts. Funny and riveting stuff. I thought he might have been interested in some of my added dimension collection. We'll see. This has taken a while to get together - about 55 years. I'm going to bed now.
